Brunelleschi's Dome: How a renaissance genius reinvented architecture

피렌체 여행을 가면 모든 사람이 방문하는 유명한 건축물이 있다. 흔히들 ‘두오모’라고 이야기하는 ‘꽃의 성모 마리아’ 성당, 즉 ‘Santa Maria del Fiore’이다. 세 가지 색깔 대리석으로 장식한 외벽도 화려하지만, 거대한 규모를 자랑하는 돔 역시 유명한 볼거리이다. 이 돔의 놀라운 점은 거의 600년 전인 1420년부터 지어졌는데도 불구하고, 현재까지도 가장 큰 크기의 벽돌돔이라는 점이다. 중세의 암흑시대를 막 벗어난 이탈리아 도시 국가에서 이런 놀라운 건축물을 만들었다는 점에서 직접 눈으로 볼만한 가치가 있다.
그 당시 성당건물은 단순히 종교행사의 장소제공을 위한 것이 아니었다. 중세 유럽 도시의 중심에 위치한 성당은, 그 도시를 지배하고 있는 가문/지배자에게는 최고의 광고판이었다. 때문에 그때 피렌체를 지배했던 메디지 가문은 꽃의 성모 마리아 성당을 위해 수백년에 걸친 건설프로젝트를 진행하였다. 성당의 돔 건축 프로젝트는 ‘The Opera del Duomo’라는 단체를 통해서 이루어졌는데, 이 단체는 Wool Guild에 의해 관리되었다. 길드의 대표들은 건축에 대해서 몰랐기 때문에 건축 프로젝트를 진행할 사람을 공개경쟁을 통해 선정하였다. 그렇게 해서 선발된 2명의 Capomaestro중의 한명이 브루넬리시치였고, 결국 그의 천재적인 노력에 의해 두오모의 돔이 완성되었다.
이 책은 그 사람, Brunelleschi에 대한 이야기이다. 그의 생애와 성격, 그리고 그가 Santa Maria del Fiore의 Capomaestro로 일하면서 극복해야 했던 공학적인 문제점들을 상세하게 설명해준다. 건출물 자체도 놀랍지만, 600년 전의 사람에 대해서 이렇게 생생한 책을 쓸 수 있다는 점이 더욱 놀랍다. 이 시기는 우리나라로 치면 조선시대 초기인데, 그 시대상황을 무척이나 상세하고 생생하게 이야기해 준다. 조선시대 초기 유명인에 대해서도 이 정도로 세부적인 역사서가 가능할지 궁금하다.
작년 ‘The Edge of the World’ 이후, 중세유럽의 역사를 다룬 두 번째 원서를 읽었는데, 공통적인 놀라움은 그 풍부한 사료와 다양한 자료들이다. 불과 몇 년 전에 이루어진 프로젝트를 사후 분석하는 것처럼 당시 기술적인 문제점과 그 해결책을 만들어내는 과정을 너무나 생생하게 사료를 바탕으로 제시하기 때문에 큰 어려움 없이 책의 내용에 빠져들 수 있었다. 왕이나 궁전의 일이 아니라, 저잣거리를 살아가던 사람들의 삶을 이렇게 생생하게 복원해서 제공해주기 때문에 역사서를 읽는 재미가 있다. 심지어 국가 간의 전쟁조차도 단순한 명분만으로 설명을 시도했던 국사책에 비하면, 이런 독서는 차라리 즐거움에 가깝다.
역사가는 과거에 일어났던 사실을 이야기로 풀어주는 사람이 아닐까?
