유럽의 변방으로 취급되었던, 북유럽의 중세 역사를 조명하는 책. 네덜란드를 중심으로 북해지역이 유럽의 형성에 미친 영향들을 설명해준다. 중세시대 Frisian 이라는 북해지역에 살았던 민족에 대한 소개를 시작으로, 돈의 발명, 책의 거래, 바이킹, 도시의 생성, 신분을 벗어난 패션의 유행, 세속적인 법률의 재발견과 합리적 사고의 발전, 늪지대를 개척하여 경작지를 늘린 네덜란드의 발전, 도시의 생성 등의 주제를 설명한다.
한국과는 관련이 적은 지역이라서 그 동안 접해보지 못했던 역사를 접할 수 있는 독서였다. 이탈리아와 지중해를 중심으로 한 남부 유럽과 프랑스와 독일의 중부유럽에 대해서는 그래도 어느 정도 익숙한데, 중세시대로부터 시작되는 네덜란드, 독일북부, 폴란드 북부등의 지역에 대한 역사는 꽤나 생소한 내용이다. 또한 역사서술의 중심을 왕과 왕조가 아닌 그 지역에서 살았던 개개인의 삶을 통해서 보여주기 때문에 보다 생생한 역사서술을 접할 수 있었다.

“Legends of conversion are shining things, full of brave martyrs, furiously convincing preachers, truth triumphing. The actual business of conversion was exceedingly muddy: sometimes brutal, sometimes shallow, sometimes expensive and it never had much to do with hearts and minds.”

“Clothes defined hime, and he chooses how he wants to be defined: which is the essence of fashion, which means changing the way you dress just because you want to; and also means having a shrewd idea of what your time and place require so you can be defiant."

네덜란드의 습지를 개간하여 농경지로 바꾸기 위해서 사용된 관계기술들은 결국 네덜란드의 문화에 영향을 미쳤다.
“A seemingly simple activity, the digging of peat, changed a culture, redefined how the world thought of a people, changed the way money makes things happen, remade a whole landscape and turned peasant farmers into men with international connections, at least in the eel and butter trades. There never was a truly simple change."
- 7. Overseeing nature
중세 프란치스코 수도회의 로저 베이컨으로부터 시작된 과학 혁명에 대한 이야기도 재미있다. 예전부터 수도승인 사람이 어떻게 과학적인 사고방식의 시초가 되었는지 궁금해했던 적이 있는데, 책에 따르면 베이컨은 과학적 방법론을 통해 동방으로부터 다가오는 몽골족의 마법에 대항 할 수 있으리라 생각했다고 한다.
“He proposed them all against the coming of the Antichrist, the darkest magician of them all(Mongols를 의미함). He was absolutely sure that science was now an urgent matter."
“Although we do not clearly understand these marvels in the world, or others greater still,’ the author of the History says, ‘they are not therefore the be taken as omens or reckoned portents foreboding the deluge.’"
- 8. Science and money
역사시간에 배웠지만, 도대체 그 정체가 묘했던 Hansa에 대해서 구체적인 사실들을 알 수 이었다. Hansa는 국가도 아니고, 왕조도 아닌, 오직 상업적 이해만을 목표로 뭉쳐진 상인도시들의 연합이었다. 하지만, 상업활동을 보장 받기 위해 때때로 국가를 위협하기도 하고, 국가와 협상을 진행하기도 하였다. 가장 신비로운 부분은 그들의 조직은 비교적 느슨한 클럽에 가깝게 운영되었다는 점이다. 그렇게 오랫동안 유럽의 역사에서 큰 역할을 했는데도 불구하고 전체를 관리하는 조직이나, 공통의 자산, 룰 등이 없었다.
“The divisions in Lübeck help explain why Hansa men were oddly reluctant to say exactly what a Hansa was, or who belonged to it; a bit of doubt kept things together. It was a corporate kind of power which liked its privacy."
“The Hansa stood outside all that. It was a cartel of towns in the north, mostly on the Baltic, all more or less German-speaking, which banded together to keep their ships safe, make sure they were well treated in foreign ports, and get as close as they could to the perfect state of traders: monopoly"
